More about this course

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Turn a purchase request into an evidenced business need, compare realistic sourcing options, and define requirements that suppliers can deliver and buyers can assess.

This independent practice course supports revision for CIPS Level 4, Defining Business Need (L4M2). Its 300 original questions address the three learning outcomes in the current publicly linked Level 4 syllabus: developing business cases, understanding markets, and developing specifications. The syllabus and public module details were checked in October 2026.

A route from topic practice to timed decisions

  • Business need and business cases: distinguish buying situations, challenge proposed solutions, evaluate benefits and dependencies, and interpret budget performance.
  • Costs and whole-life decisions: separate direct and indirect costs, assess pricing and estimates, and compare acquisition, use, maintenance, transition and end-of-life effects.
  • Markets and competitive forces: apply sector constraints, distinguish credible alternatives from nominal supplier lists, and test the drivers behind price changes.
  • Specifications and functional value: choose conformance and performance approaches, define scope and acceptance, assess ESG evidence, and review standardisation, value analysis and value engineering.

Each topic set contains 45 questions. Two additional mixed sets contain 60 questions each, with a 90-minute time allowance and a 70% practice pass mark, reflecting the published module examination size, duration and pass threshold. The selection of topics and question types within these sets is the author’s design; it is not an official examination blueprint or a prediction of live questions.

Every question includes feedback for each answer option, an explanation of the deciding conditions, and a study tip. Scenarios include manufacturing interfaces, site readiness, retail demand, financial-service continuity, agricultural timing and service capacity. Calculation questions state their assumptions so you can focus on the correct comparison rather than guess hidden conventions.

Start with the topic sets, keep a short record of your error patterns, and then attempt each mixed set closed-book. Review correct answers as well as mistakes: a correct guess still needs explanation. Revisit weak topics before your next timed attempt.

This is a question-based revision resource, not a complete taught qualification. Use it alongside your CIPS learning materials.
