  • Choose security controls for the right SDLC stage, repository visibility, hosting environment, and product entitlement.
  • Respond to exposed credentials and distinguish issuer revocation, service recovery, alert closure, and source hygiene.
  • Diagnose dependency-review gates, Dependabot update policies, inventory gaps, and workflow trust boundaries.
  • Interpret CodeQL extraction, dataflow, analysis origins, and SARIF acceptance versus displayed findings.
  • Prioritize repair using vulnerability evidence, exposure, ownership, and an explicitly stated organization policy.
  • Evaluate security configurations, roles, defaults, enforcement, and product-specific active-committer usage.

More about this course

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Recognizing a security feature is easier than deciding what to do when its results conflict with permissions, workflow behavior, or incomplete evidence. These 336 practice questions help you work through those decisions for GitHub Advanced Security and the GH-500 certification.

The course follows the July 2026 GH-500 skills outline: GitHub Security suites and ecosystem, Secret Protection, supply chain security, Code Security, security operations, and security suites administration. Scenarios state the relevant repository visibility, hosting environment, entitlement, or policy so you can practice applying a rule under its actual conditions.

Six practice tests

  • Security Suites and Governance: 56 questions on feature selection, access, configuration, licensing, and effective coverage.
  • Secret Protection: 56 questions on detection, push protection, validity, incident response, exclusions, and custom patterns.
  • Dependencies and Supply Chain Security: 56 questions on inventory, Dependabot, dependency review, update policy, and workflow trust.
  • CodeQL and Security Operations: 56 questions on extraction, dataflow, SARIF, repair evidence, prioritization, and collaboration.
  • Mixed Timed Practice 1: 56 questions across all six domains, with a 100-minute timer.
  • Mixed Timed Practice 2: 56 further questions across all six domains, with a 100-minute timer.

Each question includes an explanation for every option, an overall explanation, and a focused review tip. Selected questions link to official documentation. You will compare similar situations that require different actions: a revoked credential versus one merely removed from a file, a passing dependency-review action versus a workflow that masks its failure, and an accepted SARIF upload versus complete represented coverage.

Start with the focused tests to identify gaps. Before reading the feedback, explain which condition determines your answer. Then use the mixed tests to practice switching between configuration, diagnosis, remediation, and governance. Revisit missed decisions with the cited documentation rather than memorizing answer positions.

The four focused tests use 90-minute practice timers. The mixed tests use the currently published 100-minute exam duration and the official domain-weight ranges. The 56-question test length and 80% practice target are course choices. The official 700/1000 scaled passing score is not an 80% or 70% raw-answer conversion, and these tests do not reproduce every possible interactive exam task.

This is independent practice material, not an official exam or an endorsement by GitHub or Microsoft. It contains original questions rather than live exam questions and does not guarantee a passing result. The course provides question-based practice, not hosted labs or a paid GitHub subscription.

Choose one answer1 of 3

A developer needs to inspect the vulnerable package version and patch details for an enabled Dependabot alert in a GitHub.com repository. Which repository area is the appropriate starting point?

Before you begin

  • Understand Git repositories, branches, pull requests, and basic GitHub Actions workflows.
  • Be familiar with dependencies, credentials, and common application-security risks.
  • No paid GitHub account is needed to answer the questions; optional hands-on exploration depends on your own environment and entitlement.

Who this is for

  • GH-500 candidates who want focused and mixed practice for the July 2026 skills outline.
  • Developers and DevOps engineers who configure or troubleshoot GitHub security workflows.
  • Application-security practitioners who review findings, coordinate remediation, and assess effective security coverage.
